On 29 July 1937, Malmi Airport was visited by the largest aircraft yet seen in Finland. The "superjumbo" of its time, Lufthansa's 34-passenger-seat Junkers G.38 "Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg" (D-APIS) brought the Latvian team of 31 marksmen to the shooting world championship contest.

The diesel-powered giant never returned. In the turmoil of World War II, British fighters destroyed the "Hindenburg", converted into a military transport, at Athens airport on 17 May 1941.
