The updated inventory of built cultural environments of national significance (RKY) has been accepted by the Council of State on 22 December 2009.

The RKY, an inventory made by the National Board of Antiquities (NBA), must be taken into account ab initio in land use planning. Malmi Airport was included in the earlier inventory (1993) as well, but now its entry has been clarified to unambiguously encompass the whole airport area including the runways. This interpretation has consistently been expressed by the NBA in all its statements e.g. during the Helsinki General Plan 2002 process.

The uniquely well-preserved and authentic 1930's milieu of Malmi Airport has also international value as a living monument to the early days of commercial aviation. Twice in the 2000's, the Airport has been selected to the List of 100 Most Endangered Sites by the international World Monuments Watch programme.
